Leadership, motivation and discipline

Leadership, motivation and discipline are such important parts of a thriving, winning society, company or organization.

Leadership

I believe that leadership is a misunderstood and undervalued concept in societies and organizations alike. I further think that we, as society, tend to expect to much from people in leadership positions.

We somehow have this notion that they cannot and should not do anything wrong, and when they do, we are ready to burn them at the stake. We are over critical and always believe we can do it better.

Extreme Ownership

One of my favourite books on the topic of leadership is ‘Extreme ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win’ by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. They have seen the affect of good and bad leadership in real life on the battleground.

In the book, the responsibility of leadership is given to and expected of each individual and I believe every team who is aiming for a high level of performance should apply this to every level of the team. In other words, each individual must take extreme ownership of their own area of responsibility and do it to the utmost best of their abilities.

Before I continue I highly recommend you get and read the book for yourself. If you’d like to buy it now, you can get it via my affiliate link to loot.co.za below:

This brings me to the real reason for this post. Jocko Willink shared a thought that makes a lot of sense to me, made me rethink the importance of motivation and inspired me to publish this post.

Jocko Willink quote motivation and discipline

Motivation is great and I am a enthusiastic advocate for motivation. I have come to realize, however, that motivation is great for getting you started, but when energy and results run low, and times get tough, motivation soon leaves you high and dry. You should not count on it.

By the way, I have posted a video on this topic on my YouTube channel:

Motivation

It will get you started, but don’t count on it to keep you going out there daily and get the job done.

Count on discipline. What is discipline, and how do you get it? I am sure in many people’s minds when you hear the word discipline, you may have a negative connotation to the word – a word that is often assosciated with punnishment and control or regulation of behaviour.

Discipline

The original meaning of discipline is to teach or learn skills and knowledge. To learn a discipline is to practice it until you master that skill an you can apply that effectively.

In my mind, discipline is simply taking consistent action to form daily habits in your life that add value toward attaining mastery of an aspect (or aspects) of you life.

Each time you master something, no matter how big or small it may be, you have developed a better you, and as far as I am concerned, that should be the only measure of success.

In conclusion: Leadership gives direction, motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you going
